Siem Reap Governor Warns of $10,000 Penalty for “Hacking” Rentals
On the afternoon of May 23, the governor of Siem Reap Province, Bashaotian, issued a notice on Facebook, requesting that hosts throughout the province should not accept foreigners without legal documents, and stressed that illegal activities involving online fraud will be severely cracked down.
According to the notice, hosts who illegally host foreigners with no legal status or inadequate documents will be fined 4 million KRW (about $1,000 USD) per person.If multiple people are involved, the amount of the fine will be calculated cumulatively, up to a maximum of $10,000.
The notice also specifically states that hosts who are found to be involved in, assisting, or harboring online fraudulent activities will face stricter legal liability under the law, in addition to administrative penalties.
